dependent
/ infant care space

The
new air terminal gives a fresh look to the Naval Air Station and provides an
up-to-date facility for both military personnel and their dependents. The first
floor responds to ticketing/check-in, baggage claim area, U.S. Customs and administrative
program needs. The second floor includes two new aircraft boarding gates and
boarding lounges with panoramic views of the airfield and the Chesapeake Bay.
Immigration facilities, a short-order dining facility, a dependent/infant care
space and USO and VIP lounges are accommodated on the second floor. The third
floor is dedicated to the Air Terminal Operations Center which provides a view
of the aprons and airfield. The building program resulted in a compact symmetrical
solution, accented by a central escalator/stair lobby. The terminal complex
is accompanied by a landscaped entrance plaza and is situated between two child
recreation areas. Rusticated precast concrete walls surrounding the first floor
and matching landscape screen walls create a formal presence as well as passive
force protection. Vehicle circulation and direct ground level deployment design
features maintain a high mobility processing capability and required security
during military threat response conditions. Future expansion needs were incorporated
into the overall planning of the facility.
