Originally designed and built in 1827 by prominent neoclassical architect John Haviland, Building No. 1 at the Naval Medical Center was the first United States Naval Hospital. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This project included major restoration and renovation of the 5-story, 143,860 SF building and its grounds. Important elements of work include restoration and landscape design for the building courtyard and its south colonnade, and an addition of an enclosed pedestrian bridge connection to the new acute care hospital. The reconfiguration of floor layouts accommodating administrative offices and support areas, medical directorates, the Admiral's command suite and conference areas was also an important element. The project also includes a 25,000 SF medical library, which incorporates state of the art information technology systems within traditional interior spaces finished with classic period columns, trim, detail. Shriver and Holland Associates provided project cost estimating services, interior design, furniture selection, sandstone façade restoration, and design services for the restoration of the Hospital Point Park.
