SHRIVER
AND HOLLAND ASSOCIATES
Shriver
and Holland Associates prepared a programming and planning study for the expansion
and modernization of the 1911 building. The project comprises the addition of
approximately 80,000 SF and renovation of approximately 150,000 SF bringing
the existing Greek revival structure into current code compliance and providing
information age building systems. Additional space was created by converting
two, three-story "service courtyards" into interior solar atria now housing
the cafeteria and library. The two new atria, which straddle the auditorium
in the heart of the building, consolidate and centralize thus enhancing energy
efficiency through a reduced building perimeter. An art and science lab "infill"
completes the north elevation of the two solar atria and connects the existing
east and west classrooms. Renovation highlights include restoration of the terra
cotta ornamented neoclassical facade and refurbishment of the 800 seat auditorium
to its 1911 vintage splendor.
