James River Elementary School and Community Center
  SHRIVER AND HOLLAND ASSOCIATES
This new model Elementary School and Community Center houses 600 students. The cafeteria, library and gymnasium are designed for expansion to accommodate up to 800 total students. Twenty-four classrooms are clustered in three circular groups around a bright, airy library. Each of the clusters includes two grade levels. Paired classrooms are separated by operable partitions for flexibility and team teaching. A Macintosh computer lab in the centrally located library provides a school-wide computer network and an audiovisual system giving the students from each room instant access to information and software. Located adjacent to the historic Carter's Grove Plantation home, the school corresponds with the architecture of Colonial Williamsburg through the use of brick, sloped roofs, and single-story elements.
