The new 108,650 SF. Engineering School building is located at a highly visible perimeter intersection on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Its articulated modern expression incorporates traditional campus materials and provides a progressive image for the school. The design scheme is linear, defining the northern edge of the campus as an important cross-axis of pedestrian circulation. The facility houses technologically sophisticated offices and engineering laboratories, which are separated by the linear circulation spine. Emphasis was placed on providing offices with view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The building's architecturally distinctive atrium is a favorite meeting place for students. The space features innovations such as a bridge connection to Whittemore Hall, and provides convenient access to other campus locations. SOM served as associated architects.
