The Fine and Performing Arts Center at Old Dominion University contains a variety of music, dance, and art spaces, including a 200-seat recital hall, ensemble rooms, music and dance teaching studios, a multimedia art lecture room, art library, and administrative areas. A two-story sky lit atrium provides primary east-west pedestrian axis on campus and creates an exciting art galleria. The galleria slices through the building and separates the high volume rehearsal spaces from the teaching studios, offices and classrooms. The east end of the atrium expands to form a generous lobby area outside the recital hall. This new building is sited on a peripheral road next to the student center, where it is highly visible to the community. The exterior of the building relates to the brick and cast stone palette of materials found throughout the campus, especially the adjacent student center. Smooth and rusticated limestone banding and medallions emphasize entrances and form an articulated plinth for the building.
