The city of Reykjavik sponsored a design competition for the revitalization of the central city. It offered the opportunity to establish a long-term coordinated strategic framework for the area's physical, economic and cultural development. The firm's proposal was intended to offer a structure for continued planning and development of the planning concepts presented and sought to create an active and stimulating urban environment that has a monumental civic presence, yet is fundamentally harmonious and complimentary to the scale, form and patterns of the existing City Center. The proposal provided a practical approach to reestablishing vital connections within the City that would form a basis for subsequent planning and development. Shriver and Holland Associates in association with Teiknistofa Halldorssonar Husameistara and EDAW Inc. collaborated in the proposal directed toward a comprehensive development plan that utilized the opportunities inherently available at the area of the project site and environs, while extending and enhancing the character of the established urban setting.
